How To Sell More (The Reason #1 Behind Poor Sales)6 min read

Read the article to boost sales. (Not for people with weak stomachs.)

You most probably went “Yuck” the moment you read the title.

But wait… Let me tell you a short story first.

(And I promise everything will click at the end — just bear with me here.)

A Strange Museum

In the last few weeks, I have been in Copenhagen, Demark (both business and pleasure).

Since Sweden is very close to Copenhagen, one afternoon I decided to visit a small Swedish town called Malmo.

You think now, “What’s so great about that”?

Well, nothing.

It was boring as hell.

Malmo is one of those small towns where nothing much is happening — especially not on Sundays. (And it was also below 0 Celsius — so, freezing cold).

Then one thing happened that “opened” my eyes.

I saw a long queue on the opposite side of the street (next to a sign that read “Disgusting Food Museum”).

So, I followed the crowd and in the blink of an eye, I was inside this “museum” (paying approximately $22 to get inside).

Impressions?

This “museum” is actually a room of approximately 90 square meters (not much bigger than your apartment).

It had 3 long tables with different “dishes” laid down there.

(These dishes are actually strange foods people across the globe eat.)

The best part?

Everywhere smells of rotten meat/eggs. Ever left a chicken or an egg in your refrigerator past the expiry date?

That’s exactly the smell.

And that’s not all… Next to each dish, there is a small jar you can bring closer to your nose to “better experience this note of smell”…

Ohh boy…

A few times I almost threw up (even without smelling a single jar). (A poor couple next to me was inhalating each jar’s content as if was an oxygen bag on the airplane that suffered decompression…)

The stinky winner?

Now enough about the museum…

Why Is Your Offer Not Selling

Let’s talk about your website and the product/service you are struggling to sell. (And how this relates to the story.)

The point I learned in Malmo is this:

Even rotten food has its customers if marketed right.

Now, I am not trying to devalue anyone’s work or idea here…

What I am saying is just that others are managing to sell literally anything.

In other words, no matter what the product is, there will be a person out there who finds it invaluable.

And at the same time, your product or service continues to struggle to get attention.

(Product can be a blog article, video, social media post, or anything else that is supposed to earn you money.)

You might think now, well, that’s not fair…

In fact, it doesn’t matter if it’s fair or not…

What matters is that your product/service has its audience (guaranteed).

So, you don’t have to develop a new one even if it’s not selling right now.

But you have to “wrap it up in a nicer package” because, let’s face it, everything is a perception (work on the offer side of things).

(The museum from the story is actually the 2nd most visited attraction in Malmo on TripAdvisor… They are making thousands of dollars daily.)

And no, I am not telling you here that you should have a BS product and then sugarcoat it.

But rather that even a decent product can be a big hit if marketed correctly (to the right audience).

What Can You Do About It

Here are 8 steps with the linked articles that can help you sell more (now that we ruled out the possibility that your product is faulty).

Still not convinced that your product is good enough?

What if I told you that this product has its audience as well and that they are making crazy money on this…

And I bet your offering is solving some more realistic problem than this

There you have it.

Final Thoughts

A short visit to a museum that “sells” rotten meat inspired me to write this post.

People are managing to sell things that are hard to even imagine.

(And they make a huge success out of it simply because others buy it.)

I tried explaining here that almost any product you have “will do”…

The reason why your product is not getting enough sales is simple…

You are not putting it in front of the right audience (or you don’t have any audience at all).

This post also gives 8 steps on how to market the product to the audience that will want to buy it.
