How Much Does Medium Pay For Your Articles? (24h Case Study)3 min read

24 hours ago, all my Medium stories were public… Now they are all behind the paywall. Here is what Medium paid me (with screenshots).

I have been writing on Medium regularly in the last 3 months. (To this day, I have published 64 articles in total.)

My plan was to enable the paywall for all my articles at once (but not too early)…

(Since there are some advantages of having public articles — more eyeballs; a higher chance someone will link to it.)

Long story short, I decided to wait for the first 1,000 followers (read here step-by-step to get to 1,000 followers).

And only then enable the paywall.

Note: Medium started as a hobby for me and I already have several streams of income so there was no urgency here. Some other folks might enable the paywall much sooner (and it is totally fine and logical to do so).

Exactly 24 hours ago, I restricted all my articles (64 of them)…

(And yes, until yesterday, I was making $0 on Medium.)

Before I show you what I make now, let’s look at the post statistics.

All posts generated ± 2,000 views in the last 30 days

Every day, my posts generate 50–100 views.

(The first full day after enabling the paywall, my articles got 88 views.)

So, how much did Medium pay me for that?

Here, in black and white.

Medium paid me $3,41 for 88 views in the last 24 hours.

(This is more or less in line with the expectation that 1,000 views earn between $15–$30.)

Although not a significant amount, I was at $0 just one day ago…

(And when at zero, it doesn’t matter how much you multiply your efforts… You always end up at zero…)

0 x ANY_NUMBER = 0

But now, it’s a completely different story.

The efforts started paying off…

And you can do just the same (and better — if you don’t believe, read this post).

The only crucial advice I can give you is don’t give up (and yes, get some traffic rolling.)
